Frequently Asked Questions

What is Counselling?

It is providing guidance, support and proven methods to help you cope with mental health issues, relationship challenges or life transitions.  The emphasis is on emotional wellbeing and personal growth. You do not need a referral.

How is this different to a Psychologist?

A psychologist requires more years of study.  They can diagnose and treat a broader and more serious range of mental health disorders eg. schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, severe depression etc. Their treatment is generally seen as long term from months to years depending on the diagnosis. They are generally one and a half times more than the cost of a Counsellor and require a referral from a GP along with a Mental Health Treatment Plan for any rebate.

Type of Counselling?

I use an integrative approach tailor-made to your individual needs and goals which include person-centred, solution-focussed, cognitive behavioural therapy, mindfulness and relaxation techniques.

Is Counselling Confidential?

Anything we discuss is strictly confidential and between us.  There are rare exceptions to this rule strictly governed by legislation and codes of practice which we will discuss prior to our first session.

How long are Counselling Sessions?

Sessions are 60 minutes long and happen either weekly or fornightly according to the individual.  Treatment is generally seen as short term with an average of 6 sessions depending on the client and the presenting issues.

Do you offer Online or Phone Counselling?

For those occasions where in person is not possible, I offer online and phone counselling when needed.

How Will I know if it is Working?

If you would like to work towards some goals whether big or small, we can use SMART goals which are specific, measurable, achievable, realistic goals within a certain timeframe so progress will be easy to track. You will definitely be able to see your progress and tweak certain things when needed.

What if I need to Cancel or Reschedule an Appointment?

That is totally fine, as long as you give me 24 hours notice. Cancellations or rescheduling an appointment less than 24 hours before our scheduled appointment will be individually assessed and a fee charged if warranted.

Are you licensed or accredited by any professional organisation?

I am a licensed Counsellor and member of the Australian Counselling Association Level 1.

Do you have an area of special interest?

My passion lies in adolescents and young adults.

I'm scared

Taking that first step is really tough but to do nothing is even tougher.  My only focus is you and to make sure you feel safe and comfortable. That includes going at the pace you set with only the things you feel comfortable to talk about. There is no hidden agenda, you call the shots and I'm here to support. End of story.

How do I know you are the right Counsellor for me?

Let's have a chat with absolutely no charge or obligation. You can get a feel of whether or not we can work together and make the call after our chat.  Just email me and we can set that up.
